Meghalaya Races to Complete National Games Preparations, Focus on Home Athletes

Meghalaya has stepped up preparations to host the 2027 National Games, with the State Government focusing on sporting infrastructure, athlete training, accommodation, transportation and logistics across multiple locations. The preparations were reviewed by the Estimate Committee, which was briefed by the Sports and Youth Affairs Department on the readiness of venues and the state’s athletes ahead of the multi-discipline sporting event.

Chairman of the Estimate Committee and MLA from Nongpoh Constituency Mayralborn Syiem said the committee reviewed the preparations, including infrastructure being developed in Shillong, Tura and Jowai, besides locations in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi districts. He said the State faces challenges relating to accommodation, transportation and logistics but expressed optimism following the department’s briefing.

Talking to Media persons in Shillong, Syiem said, “We have review the preparation for the National game to be held in Meghalaya in 2027.”

He said the State has around six months to complete the remaining preparations and stressed that equal attention must be given to the readiness of Meghalaya’s home athletes across all 39 disciplines to be conducted in the State and other northeastern States. He said substantial financial support has been provided by the government towards preparations and athlete development.

Syiem said, “…..So the sports and youth affairs department enlightened the committee briefing about a preparedness how Athletes are being prepared, infrastructure are being prepared in various locations in Shillong Tura Jowai apart from few areas in East Khasi Hills and Ri Bhoi district. Accomodation ,transport, logistics issues that we have. It is a challenge for the state but we are optimistic after seeing and being enlighten by the Department. We have another six months left for the game I hope we have all the infrastructure completed in due course of time and very importantly the preparedness of the home athletes from Meghalaya in all the 39 decipline that will be conducted in the state of Meghalaya as well as in the other North Eastern state, we are optimistic that our young athletes, boys, and girls they will have a proper Avenue with a kind of financial implication which the state has really pumped.”

The committee’s review also placed emphasis on athlete welfare, with the government seeking to provide proper nutrition, specialised training and coaching support. Syiem said coaches from within the country as well as abroad would be engaged as part of the effort to prepare Meghalaya’s athletes for the Games.

“…..and the government as a whole to ensure that all athletes still have proper diet. They will have proper training. They will have proper coaches being from within the country from outside the country also, so that we can prepare ourselves to bring Laurel to the state,” he added.
