Meghalaya holds all-party consultation on reservation policy report

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday chaired an all-party meeting to deliberate on the expert committee’s report on the State Reservation Policy, initiating a consultative process on one of the State’s most sensitive governance questions. Representatives of several political parties attended and placed their views and suggestions, while the Opposition Voice of the People Party did not participate in the meeting.

The consultation held following the tabling of the committee’s report in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly earlier this year, after which the government indicated it would seek wider political inputs before moving ahead.

The meeting focused on presenting the key findings and recommendations of the expert committee to political parties, with the government initiating discussions on the way forward and inviting further suggestions after a detailed review of the report.

Cyril V. Darlong Diengdoh, Commissioner and Secretary to Government of Meghalaya (Home, Law, Personnel, Planning), said,

“The report of the expert committee on the state reservation policy was table in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the 18th of February 2026 during the course of those proceeding, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had made a statement in the house that all the political parties will be called to see their views and consultations and to present basically, to findings of the report.”

Stating that this report has already been tabled in the house and has been given to all the members of the Assembly, he said, “Today we had presented the main findings of the committee on the reservation policy to all the political parties.”

“The chief minister has also directed us to give all these political parties a copy of these report, as you know it’s a volumous report, 21 volumes, almost 4000 pages. So the findings and their main recommendations of the committee were presented to the political parties and we had a discussion only same,” Diengdoh added.

“So I don’t think there is an need for any other meeting, some political parties may also give further suggestions after they go to the report. So we are requested them to go through the report in detail,” he said.
