Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Friday said the State Government has proposed that the Budget Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly begin from mid-February, during which the report of the Expert Committee on the State’s Reservation Policy will be placed before the House, marking a crucial legislative step on a long-pending and sensitive issue.

Speaking after the Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said the government has already moved a formal proposal to the Governor, outlining the tentative schedule of the Budget Session and the agenda for tabling the expert panel’s report. The proposed session, he said, is expected to commence around February 16 and continue until February 27, subject to the Governor’s approval.
“We have proposed to the Governor that the budget session of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly will be started from the mid of February exact date about February 16 if I’m not wrong and the calendar but February 16th, the Monday and up to February 27th,” Sangma said.
The Chief Minister underlined that the final decision on convening the Assembly rests with the Governor and that the government is awaiting the formal call for the sitting. He said the Cabinet, after deliberation, agreed that the Budget Session would be the most appropriate forum to place the Expert Committee’s report on the Reservation Policy before the legislature.
“So We have proposed to the governor. We are waiting for the governor to call the sitting of the Assembly budget session. Based on that proposal the cabinet has also decided that it is most appropriate that we will be placing the report of Expert Committee on Reservation during budget session of 2026,” Sangma said.
The tabling of the report during the Budget Session is expected to trigger detailed discussions inside and outside the Assembly, as the findings of the Expert Committee are seen as significant for future policy decisions related to reservation in the state.
