Meghalaya BJP Legislator Wants Protection for People Against Influx

Shillong, 6 June 2025: Senior BJP leader and Cabinet Minister AL Hek has voiced strong support for introducing railway connectivity in Meghalaya, while firmly insisting on safeguards to protect local communities from influx and illegal immigration.

“We want railway but at the same time we need protection for the people of the state against influx and illegal immigration,” Hek said, underlining the BJP’s nuanced stance on the contentious issue.

Clarifying the party’s position, he stated, “From BJP we never say we don’t need railways. You can start good trains, if not passenger train, and in that way it will be beneficial.” He also highlighted the economic advantages of railways for citizens, saying, “The things that we buy with Rs 100 can be easily bought by spending mere Rs 60–70. This is good for the people.”

Rejecting the notion that railway connectivity is new to Meghalaya, Hek pointed out, “Railway is not a new concept in Meghalaya, even Mendipather has railways.”

Ahead of the all-party committee meeting, Hek stressed the importance of intra-party consultations. “Before all-party committee meeting there should be internal discussion within the parties, from BJP side also same views,” he said, adding, “My personal view is that there should be railways in the state but there should be mechanism against influx.”
