Summoned in connection with an FIR over an alleged inflammatory speech that could trigger communal disharmony, Roy Kupar Synrem, President of the Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council and Chairman of the Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organizations, appeared before the Investigating Officer at Sadar Police Station on Thursday, as police intensified scrutiny over remarks perceived to have the potential to disturb public order.
The case stems from a speech delivered at Motphran on March 11 during a solidarity gathering organised by CoMSO in support of the Achik community, where certain remarks circulated widely on social media drew the attention of law enforcement agencies and led to the registration of an FIR citing apprehensions over the possible impact of the statements on inter-community relations.
Appearing before the Investigating Officer, Synrem later told media persons outside the police station, “There was a particular words or phrase that have been circulated in social media the content of which has reached various people and as per the FIR the allegations is that due to the statement that I made in Motphran against any particular religion and also by making a statement that the Hynniewtrep people will take up ‘swords or any material’ to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Achik community in the Garo Hills against illegal immigration , this statement may create disharmony, may disturb peace and tranquility and it may lead to a situation where there will be communal problems between two groups.”
