An Area Commander of the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) from West Khasi Hills surrendered before the Superintendent of Police, Mairang, Eastern West District, on Thursday.
The surrendered militant was subsequently taken to the office of the Director General of Police, where he met the State’s top police official. While the circumstances and modalities of the surrender have been kept under wraps, police sources indicated that the development could have wider operational implications.
According to sources in the police establishment, the surrendered Area Commander has provided actionable information to the authorities, which is being processed for further follow-up action. Officials declined to disclose details citing the sensitivity of ongoing operations.
Meanwhile, in a related security breakthrough, police have arrested two individuals allegedly responsible for the blast attempt at Umsning. Investigations are under way to ascertain their precise roles and possible links to militant networks operating in the region.
