Senior BJP legislator A.L. Hek on Friday said the BJP was preparing to seize what he described as a “clear opportunity” in Meghalaya and work towards establishing its own government in the State, following his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi amid heightened political activity in Meghalaya.
Hek said he discussed the evolving political situation in the State with Shah and sought his guidance as the BJP seeks to strengthen its organisation and emerge as an independent political force.
In a statement issued after the meeting, the senior BJP legislator said, “Had the privilege of meeting Hon’ble Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji for a detailed discussion on the political situation in Meghalaya and the road ahead.”
He said the meeting also focused on the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) Bill and its implications for Christian organisations and stakeholders.
“We had a detailed discussion on the FCRA Bill. The Home Minister said that he has already met with at least 35 Christian forums and leaders regarding the matter. At present, the Bill has been referred to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for further discussion and consideration. He said that, after the JPC process is completed, he will invite us to Delhi for further discussions with Christian stakeholders,” Hek said
The BJP legislator said he also placed before Shah his assessment of the emerging political scenario in Meghalaya and outlined his vision for the party’s future in the State. “During the course of the conversation, I shared my assessment of the emerging political scenario in the state and our vision for the coming days. We discussed the evolving political landscape and the clear opportunity before us to emerge as a strong, credible and independent political force in Meghalaya,” the BJP leader said.
Hek said he sought Shah’s guidance and support as the BJP works towards expanding its organisational base across Meghalaya, “I also sought Shri Amit Shah Ji’s guidance, encouragement and blessings as we move forward with a clear political objective — to strengthen our organisation across the state, earn the confidence of the people, and work towards forming our own government in Meghalaya.”
His remarks assume significance against the backdrop of renewed political activity in Meghalaya and speculation over possible realignments involving regional party legislators.
Hek, however, framed the BJP’s objective in broader organisational terms, saying the party was preparing for a larger role in the State’s politics.
“The political scenario is changing, and the coming days will be decisive. We are prepared to seize this opportunity with determination, discipline and a clear sense of purpose,” he said.
Hek made it clear that the BJP’s stated ambition was not limited to participating in coalition governments. “Our goal is not merely to be a participant in Meghalaya’s politics, but to provide strong, stable and accountable leadership through a government of our own, rooted in the aspirations and interests of the people of Meghalaya,” he added.
The BJP currently has two legislators in the Meghalaya Assembly, with Hek representing Pynthorumkhrah and Sanbor Shullai representing South Shillong.
