Deputy Chief Minister in charge of District Council Affairs Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said that the timing of elections to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council will be determined only after the completion of the ongoing delimitation exercise, following which the proposal will be placed before the House and sent to the Governor for approval.
“When we are waiting right now, I think that in recently notification has come out where the delimitation committee was set up and it is the duty of this committee, to complete the task of conducting the delimitation process and once that is done, then the house will pass it and send it to the Governor for his approval. Once that is done, then only will be able to tell you when are we going to have the GHADC election?” he said.
Responding to a query on whether the State Government would wait for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) before conducting the GHADC elections, Tynsong clarified that the matter does not fall within the State’s jurisdiction. “I think that is not necessary at this juncture, because SIR again, it is not within the concern of the state government, it has to be done by the Election Commission of India. Anytime when the order comes we are ready for the SIR,” he added.
