A fire broke out at the Geonka compound near Sohra Stand, close to the Angali Cinema Hall, on Friday evening, gutting around 40 makeshift houses and leaving several families displaced.
According to Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem, six fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames, while additional fire engines were being mobilised to bring the situation under control.
Police said no casualties have been reported so far as the exact cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.
Cabinet Minister and local MLA Sanbor Shullai reached the spot and met with the affected families, taking stock of the situation.
