Shillong: A fire broke out early on Thursday morning at Shillong Engineering College in Mawlai Kynton Massar, triggering panic on the campus but causing no casualties, officials said.
The blaze was reported at around 7:34 am from a storage room where clothes and other miscellaneous items were kept. Preliminary suspicion points to a power-related fault following an outage in the area. Superintendent of police East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem said the cause of the fire is ‘Short Circuit’.
On receiving information, fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and managed to contain the fire before it could spread to adjacent rooms, preventing major damage to the building.
The Shillong Engineering College had formally commenced its first academic session after its inauguration by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma in April 2025. Authorities said further assessment of losses, if any, is underway.
