In a stunning twist that has sent shockwaves, a miner declared dead on February 8 following the February 5 dynamite blast at the Myngsnat-Thangsko coal mine has been found alive—four days after being officially pronounced deceased. The dramatic turn of events has left relatives stunned and exposed glaring lapses in identification and documentation following the explosion.
In a shocking case of mistaken identity, the family of 44-year-old Shyambabu Singha took what they believed to be his body to their native place in Karimganj, Assam, however , four days later, information surfaced that the man declared dead was, in fact, alive and undergoing treatment.
Issuing a corrigendum, the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority, East Jaintia Hills, clarified the development. “Initially declared dead but on the 12.2. 2026 information received that he is still alive and is in better condition.” According to official records, he is stated he is recovering.
In an earlier clarification addressed to the Joint Secretary, Revenue & Disaster Management Department, the Deputy Commissioner had stated that the victim of the February 5 explosion, Shyambabu Singha, who had been shifted to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), died on February 8 and that his body was handed over to his family.
