In a sharp political statement aimed at the opposition, Meghalaya BJP State President Rikman G Momin has stated that the Congress party is steadily losing its footing in the state and hinted at the possibility of its lone MLA switching sides.
The remark comes in the backdrop of BJP’s aggressive push to consolidate its organisational strength and expand its legislative presence in Meghalaya.
“Congress is loosing, who knows that one MLA also may switch over to some other party. But BJP will come and definitely we will increase our number and as a State President I am telling you right now we will increase our number,” Momin said, adding that the BJP will undoubtedly increase its numbers in the Assembly.
“I think when BJP works for the people, naturally people will accept BJP only. I don’t see any future for Congress in Meghalaya,” said Momin, highlighting the party’s weakened standing post the District Council elections. “Whatever they have right now— in Khasi Hills—it already rot out, that you have seen. And in Garo Hills, only one MP they are having and now also they have to work it out,” The State BJP President said.
While BJP holds two seats in the Assembly, Congress has just one. Asserting BJP’s growing momentum, Momin said, “BJP will come and definitely we will increase our number, and as a State President I am telling you right now—we will increase our number.”
When asked whether the BJP would accept the lone Congress MLA if he decides to defect, Momin said, “I have already said we welcome all the leaders who want to work for the party, who want to work for the country, who want to work for the state. I welcome all.”
On persistent speculation about former Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma’s association with BJP, Momin remarked, “He is in TMC, he has contested from TMC. We welcome Dr Mukul, we welcome all leaders to join and work for our country, work for our state.”
