The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Guwahati, has arrested two individuals—including Nirmalendu Saha, Professor of Zoology and Dean, School of Life Sciences at North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong—in connection with a bribery case involving ₹3.43 lakh. The second accused, Pranjal Sharma, a resident of Bishnu Rabha Path, Beltola, Guwahati, is the proprietor of a private firm.
The arrests were made during a trap laid by the CBI at the Guwahati University Guest House, where the bribe money was allegedly being transacted. A case was registered by the CBI on June 11, 2025, based on source information that the private firm owner, in collusion with the NEHU professor and unknown others, was facilitating undue advantage in exchange for supply orders of scientific equipment and laboratory items, and in the clearance of related bills.
CBI officials caught the accused red-handed and confirmed that both would be produced before the Competent Court in Guwahati today, June 12, 2025.
Searches conducted at two locations resulted in the recovery of incriminating documents, and another search operation is currently underway. The investigation is ongoing.
