In a major step towards improving regional mobility and public transport access across Meghalaya, the Cabinet has approved the Chief Minister’s Regional Connectivity Scheme 2025. The initiative is aimed at strengthening linkages between District Headquarters and Block or Regional Headquarters, with a special focus on easing daily travel for students, office-goers, and the wider public. The decision underscores the government’s commitment to bridging critical infrastructure gaps in public transportation and ensuring seamless intra-state connectivity.
MDA Spokesperson and Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh said, “The initiative will introduce a fleet of 90 buses to bridge the commute gap for students, office workers, and the general public.”
As part of the scheme, financial assistance will be extended to make ownership and operation of these buses viable and inclusive. “Under the scheme, financial support of up to 50% of the total vehicle cost will be provided. Of this, the government will contribute 35% towards the on-road cost as a down payment,” Lyngdoh said.
He added, “Beneficiaries will contribute 5%, while the remaining 60% will be financed through loans repayable over a five-year period.”
