Shillong, May 19: The Border Security Force (BSF) Meghalaya Frontier on Tuesday categorically dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming an exchange of cross-border firing between the BSF and the Bangladesh Guard Bangladesh (BGB) along the East Khasi Hills sector bordering Bangladesh’s Sylhet district.
The clarification came amid widespread speculation triggered by multiple unverified reports alleging that BSF personnel had allegedly opened fire along the East Khasi Hills sector opposite Gowainghat in Bangladesh on Monday, prompting retaliatory firing by the BGB. The reports quickly gained traction across several social media platforms, fuelling concerns over a possible escalation along the international border.
Rejecting the claims outright, BSF Inspector General, Meghalaya Frontier, OP Upadhyay, termed the reports baseless and misleading. “These are all fake reports,” Upadhyay said. He said some fake handles are circulating such reports on the social media.
The BSF’s clarification assumes significance as the India-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya remains a sensitive and closely monitored frontier, particularly in sectors prone to infiltration, smuggling and sporadic tensions. Security agencies have maintained heightened surveillance along vulnerable stretches of the international boundary, especially in the East Khasi Hills region adjoining Bangladesh’s Sylhet district.
While reports from across the border alleged that firing had taken place following an initial exchange allegedly triggered by the BSF, no official confirmation has emerged from Indian authorities apart from the BSF’s denial. There was also no immediate statement available from the Bangladesh side regarding the purported incident.
The BSF reiterated that the reports being circulated were false and urged people not to rely on unverified information shared through social media platforms.
