BJP eyes pre-poll gains in Meghalaya as sitting legislators signal possible switch

Meghalaya state BJP President Rikman G Momin said the party is witnessing significant political traction ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, with as many as three sitting legislators currently in touch with the state leadership and likely to join the saffron party, indicating a potential shift in the State’s political landscape.

Meghalaya state BJP President Rikman G Momin said, “Yes we have received feelers from sitting legislators but joining will be done only before Assembly elections. Yes we have already received feelers from three sitting legislators.” The assertion comes amid heightened political activity in the region, with sources indicating that some legislators are strategically awaiting the outcome of elections in neighbouring Assam before initiating formal discussions, including possible meetings with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in Guwahati.

Meghalaya state BJP President Rikman G Momin said the party is also expecting the induction of at least two to three former legislators, along with a prominent political figure, as part of its broader expansion strategy. “By May we are expecting some of them to join and it will keep ongoing. Moreover, from the Mandal level they have started joining like this time on Saturday atleast 100 people has joined the party,” he said, underscoring the party’s grassroots mobilisation efforts.

The developments reflect a calibrated push by the BJP to consolidate its organisational base in Meghalaya, with parallel efforts being undertaken at the district and mandal levels. In East Khasi Hills, the party recently organised a mass joining programme at Nongdawah in Mawryngkneng under the leadership of District President Priambada Blah and senior leader Dhosing Mukhim, where hundreds of members and leaders from various political parties and organisations were inducted into the BJP.
