BJP expects “much bigger political player” role in Meghalaya by 2028, says Anil Anthony

Projecting a sharper political footprint for the BJP in Meghalaya in the coming years, Meghalaya Prabhari Anil Anthony on Monday said the party expects to emerge as a “much bigger political player” in the State by 2028, linking the projection to what he described as a sustained expansion of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance across the North East over the past several years.

He pointed to a significant political shift in the region, asserting that the party’s organisational reach and governance presence had grown from a near-zero base to a dominant position across most North Eastern States, strengthening its long-term electoral ambitions in Meghalaya.

Meghalaya Prabhari Anil Anthony said, “One and half year left for Assembly elections,” and added, “We are very confident now in Garo Hills the Autonomous District Council elections has been postponed, I believe till October may be, but BJP is fully prepared for that election.” He further stated, “We were one of the first party to announce candidates for almost all 29 seats for GHADC, for almost every seats we have announced candidates and our candidates are on the ground.” He also said, “2028, you can expect BJP to be much bigger political player in the state of Meghalaya also.”

He said, “In the last few years across North East, BJP have been expanding our footprints. Seven years back in the North East, the party did not have a single state. Now, seven of the eight states are Govern by the NDA including Meghalaya, four States have the BJP as the largest party including in Assam, Arunachal, Manipur and Tripura.” He added that in other states as well the party is continuing to expand its organisational base, with the aspiration of becoming the number one political force in Meghalaya.

Talking about SIR implementation, he said, “SIR is a process that is ongoing in several States across India.” He added, “SIR – Special Intensive Revision is not in first time in the Indian history it is happening, it is something that is mandated by the constitution and from 1950s every decade in a regular intervals this processes happen during the UPA government’s regime also this has happened two or three times.” He further said the process has now restarted after Bihar and is being extended to 12 states, aimed at ensuring accurate electoral rolls.

He explained that the exercise is meant to ensure that all eligible citizens above 18 are included in the electoral rolls, duplicate entries are removed, and only citizens of India are enrolled. He noted that cases of multiple registrations due to migration or shifting residences are being corrected and linked with Aadhaar and Electoral ID systems to improve accuracy. He added that the process is being implemented systematically across the country and will also be carried out in Meghalaya to strengthen the democratic process.

On illegal infiltration, he said it remains a serious concern, adding that the Central government has taken a clear stance under the leadership of the Prime Minister and the Home Minister. He noted that border states are facing the issue and said multiple measures are underway, including border fencing and increased surveillance by security forces, including in Meghalaya, to address the challenge.
