Assam Police Rule Out Abduction in Bhabana Sarma Case, Cite Emotional Distress Behind Disappearance

In a development that brings significant relief, Assam Police have clarified that 27-year-old Bhabana Sarma was never abducted but had willingly left on her own due to personal reasons. Officials stated that the act was not pre-planned, and she was mentally disturbed at the time, leading to her sudden disappearance that had initially triggered widespread concern.
In a development that brings significant relief to both family members and a concerned public, Assam Police have categorically ruled out any abduction in the case, stating that her disappearance was voluntary and driven by personal distress rather than criminal intent. The clarification follows days of speculation and heightened anxiety surrounding her sudden absence, which had triggered fears of kidnapping.
According to the police investigation, Sarma left her residence on her own accord in the morning hours, with evidence indicating a clear and traceable movement pattern. Investigators established that she departed her home at approximately 10:30 AM on the day she was reported missing. She reportedly booked a Rapido bike and proceeded to an ATM in Jalukbari, where she withdrew ₹7,000. From there, she travelled to Paltan Bazar by an Assam State Transport Corporation bus before hiring a cab to Shillong.
Officials revealed that Sarma checked into a hotel in Shillong, where she stayed alone until she was traced by law enforcement agencies. The breakthrough came after a meticulous investigation involving CCTV footage analysis, financial transaction tracking, and local inquiries across multiple transit points.
“A dedicated team traced her movements through CCTV footage, transaction records, and local inquiries,” Assam Police stated.
The police further underscored that her actions were neither premeditated nor indicative of coercion, but rather a response to emotional strain. “We located and rescued her from the hotel in Shillong, ensuring her safe return. There was no abduction involved; she acted on her own amid emotional turmoil,” officials added.
The case, which had initially raised serious concerns about public safety, has now been reframed as one rooted in personal circumstances.
