Shillong, May 20: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home, Prestone Tynsong, on Tuesday said the state government will not hesitate to shut down toll or check gates set up by the autonomous district councils (ADCs) if they are found to be operating without legal sanction.
“Any toll gate or check gate should be supported by the law. It should be under the provision of the law. If there is no such law then there is no way out, we have to dismantle it and we have to close it down,” Mr. Tynsong told reporters.
The statement comes amid growing tensions between the state administration and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), which earlier in the day criticised the Ri Bhoi district authorities for unilaterally dismantling its toll gate at Umdihar. The KHADC described the move as a direct affront to its jurisdiction and authority.
