District Administration Revokes Permission for KSU Sit-in; KSU Says Movement Will Continue

SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills district administration has revoked the permission granted to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) for its proposed sit-in protest after the conditions imposed for the rally were allegedly violated, with the administration warning that any gathering held thereafter would amount to an unlawful assembly.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal said the permission had been revoked following the violation of the conditions laid down by the administration.

“We are going to revoke  the permission, specially in light of the incidents which has happened, I would like to again take this opportunity to inform you that even, this permission was given to KSU for the bike rally, that time also through informal communication, not just us, even police tried to establish communication with them and we were assured that is going to be a peaceful rally….,” he said.

“Since the conditions were violated, since a series of vandalism, arson and assault cases reported yesterday the permission that was given for their sit in protest tomorrow we  will be revoking,” the DC added.

The development comes amid heightened tension in Shillong following the violence that erupted during the KSU’s black-flag bike rally and the subsequent arrest of senior KSU leaders.

However, former KSU president Lambokstarwell Marngar said the organisation would continue its agitation and press the Government to implement its demands.

“After the top leader of the KSU has been arrested by the Government last night, and the current CEC we have discussed with them and they have decided to continue with this movement and we will continue so the Government should implement the demands the put in front of the government. We decided that the movement will continue,” he said.
