Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive review of flagship infrastructure projects under construction in the New Shillong Township, underlining the government’s focus on building a modern administrative, commercial and sporting hub that is expected to redefine governance, boost economic activity and support Meghalaya’s long-term development. The review, attended by the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner and Secretary of the Urban Affairs Department, senior government officials and representatives of executing agencies, comes as the State accelerates investments in public infrastructure to improve service delivery and create new avenues for employment and growth.
During the inspection, Sangma reviewed the progress of the New Secretariat Complex, Unity Mall, the Sports Complex at Umsawli and other ongoing projects. At the New Secretariat Complex, he assessed the pace of construction and directed officials to ensure the highest standards of quality while adhering to timelines. Once completed, the Secretariat will bring government departments under one roof, enhancing coordination, administrative efficiency and citizen-centric governance.
The Chief Minister also inspected the Unity Mall, which is being developed as a dedicated platform for Meghalaya’s artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs, self-help groups and local producers to showcase and market their products. The project is expected to promote local enterprise, strengthen tourism and generate sustainable livelihood opportunities across the State.
Reviewing the Sports Complex at Umsawli, Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to developing world-class sporting infrastructure for the youth of Meghalaya. The facility is expected to provide modern training and competition infrastructure, nurture sporting talent and further position the State as a regional sports hub.
The Chief Minister was also briefed on the status of other infrastructure projects across the township and directed all executing agencies to maintain close coordination, uphold strict quality standards and expedite construction while complying with prescribed timelines and safety norms.
Speaking during the review, Sangma said, “The projects being developed in New Shillong are laying the foundation for Meghalaya’s future. Investments in modern administrative, commercial, and sports infrastructure will not only improve governance and public services but also generate economic opportunities, create employment, and enhance the quality of life for the people of the State.”
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the transformative projects so that citizens can benefit from modern, efficient and sustainable public infrastructure at the earliest.
