₹3,214-Crore Highway Push Marks Major Infrastructure Milestone for Meghalaya


Meghalaya on Monday witnessed a major boost in road infrastructure as the foundation stones for four new National Highway projects, including the strategically significant Tura Bypass, and the upgradation of two existing highway stretches were laid with a total investment of ₹3,214 crore. Described by the State government as the largest sanction ever made for road infrastructure development in Meghalaya, the package is expected to transform connectivity, improve mobility, accelerate economic growth and strengthen links between key urban centres, border regions and rural areas across the State.
The projects were inaugurated by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari at a function held at Polo Ground in Shillong in the presence of Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma, State Ministers, MLAs and senior officials.
The projects include the Tura Bypass, the Dhubri–Phulbari Bridge to Selsella Simbukolgre stretch (Package I), the Pynursla Bypass on the Shillong–Dawki Road (Package III), and the Selsella Simbukolgre to Goeragre stretch (Package II). The programme also covered the upgradation of the Shillong–Dawki Road (Package I) and the Jowai Bypass.
