Amid evolving political preparations for the 2026 parliamentary by-election in Meghalaya, Khasi Authors’ Society president D.R.L. Nonglait has formally conveyed acceptance of the National People’s Party (NPP) offer to contest the seat on its ticket. The communication, addressed to the party’s president and working president in Shillong, signals the party’s efforts to consolidate its position while bringing in prominent regional voices into the electoral fray.
The move assumes significance at a time when political alignments in the State are under close watch, with parties recalibrating strategies ahead of the by-poll. Nonglait’s entry, coming from a literary and cultural background, is likely to add a distinct dimension to the contest, particularly in engaging with issues of identity, language, and regional aspirations.
In the letter, Nonglait expressed gratitude to the party leadership for the opportunity, stating, “With reference to the subject indicated above, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the leadership and members of the National Pepole’s Party for reposing faith and confidence in me by offering me the opportunity to contest the M.P. By-Election, 2026 on the party ticket. After careful consideration, I am pleased to formally accept the proposal.”
Underscoring commitment to the party’s ideology and collective functioning, the letter added, “I shall wholeheartedly abide by the principles, vision, and collective decisions of the party and work diligently for the welfare and development of the people, the state and the country.”
Seeking continued support from within the organisation, Nonglait further stated, “I look forward to the guidance, support, and cooperation of the party leadership, party workers, and well-wishers in carrying forward this responsibility with dedication and sincerity.”
