23,624 Houses Built Under PMAY in Meghalaya, Over 25,000 Sanctioned: Centre

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Virender Kumar on Monday said that 23,624 houses have been constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana in Meghalaya, with more than 25,000 houses sanctioned under the scheme in the State. He was speaking at a review meeting held at Tara Ghar in Shillong, where the progress of centrally sponsored schemes in East Khasi Hills district was assessed.
The meeting was attended by Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya, Social Welfare Department, Paul Lyngdoh, Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah and officials from various departments. The deliberations focused on implementation status and the pace of delivery of welfare schemes.
Referring to what he described as a “doubled engine Government”, Kumar cited the “PM Narendra Modi and CM Conrad Sangma joint initiative” in ensuring effective implementation of welfare programmes. Stressing inclusive delivery, he said, “No one should be deprived of the schemes and people should be benefitted from centrally sponsored schemes. In several department I have seen the implementation is very good.”
Describing housing as a key pillar of social empowerment, Kumar said, “PM Awas yojna was an important scheme. Prior of the 2014, people were not getting full benefit. Today more than 4 crore are houses built.” Reiterating the State’s performance, he said, “23624 houses are constructed under PM Awas yojna in Meghalaya.”
He underscored that the housing scheme was linked to other basic amenities, stating, “Even electricity, water, toilets, are provided.” At the same time, he pointed to gaps that require attention, observing, “LPG connection has reached less and we should work for 100 percent saturation.”
Kumar also referred to the Viksit Bharat–Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) initiative, indicating that livelihood generation and rural development remain central to the government’s priorities.
Emphasising coordinated efforts between the Centre and the State, the Union Minister said the objective is to ensure that eligible beneficiaries are not left out and that welfare schemes translate into tangible improvements in the lives of people.
