Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced the sanctioning of ₹951.27 crore for the construction of the Tura Bypass in Meghalaya. Sharing the update on his official social media page, Gadkari stated, “In Meghalaya, we have sanctioned ₹951.27 crore for the construction of the Tura Bypass, extending from NH-127B to NH-217, built to a 2-lane configuration with paved shoulders. The project, spanning 29.03 kilometres in the Tura district, is of significant strategic value.”
Elaborating on the significance of the highway alignment, Gadkari added, “NH-217 (formerly NH-51) serves as the principal artery linking Guwahati to Dalu, which lies at the international border with Bangladesh and functions as an inland customs check-post.”
He noted that the new bypass would ease traffic in the congested town center by redirecting flow around the outskirts: “The proposed bypass will commence near Sanchonggre village on NH-127B and terminate at Jenggitchakgre village on NH-217. It is designed to circumvent the current alignment of NH-217, which traverses the densely developed and heavily congested urban core of Tura town, where narrow road widths and substantial traffic volumes impede mobility.”
Highlighting the benefits of the infrastructure, the minister concluded, “This infrastructure will not only alleviate congestion within Tura but also enhance road safety by segregating local traffic from through traffic.”
