In a historic breakthrough for technical education in Meghalaya, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted official approval for the establishment of the Shillong Government College of Engineering—the state’s first-ever government engineering institution.
The Letter of Approval (LoA), dated April 30, 2025, was issued to the Principal Secretary of Education, Government of Meghalaya. The new institution will be set up at Mawlai Kynton Massar in East Khasi Hills district and will be academically affiliated with North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.
The college will begin operations with two undergraduate programs in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering, each offering an initial intake of 30 students for the academic session 2025–26. Additionally, 10 percent of the seats will be reserved for candidates from the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), in accordance with state government policy.
Announcing the development on social media, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma wrote, “Thrilled to announce that Shillong Government College of Engineering has received the Letter of Approval from the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) for launching Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering courses, marking the first government engineering college in the state.”
