In a major infrastructure push that signals the government’s renewed focus on transforming connectivity in Garo Hills, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday announced that the Meghalaya Government will release ₹50 crore to the Airports Authority of India (AAI) within this month to initiate long-awaited works at the Jengjal Airport. Calling Jengjal “a very important place for Garo Hills,” the Chief Minister positioned the airport project as a catalyst for economic growth, mobility, and future development in the region.
Sangma said, “We have handed over the Jengjal Airport to the Airport Authority of India earlier this year and they have submitted Rs 50 Cr estimate to the state government. I am happy to announce here that within this month the government will sanction Rs 50 Cr to Airport Authority of India so that works can start at the Jengjal Airport.”
He informed that once completed, the upgraded airport will enable 19-seater Air Alliance aircraft to operate from Jengjal, with Shillong–Tura flights scheduled to be the first priority. The Chief Minister further added that the government is scouting for land in Jengjal to develop a permanent venue capable of hosting mega events, positioning the region as an emerging hub for major gatherings and state-level programmes.
