Meghalaya Rains Claim Six Lives, Affect Over 1,200 People Across 86 Villages

SHILLONG, June 1: In a devastating turn of events, incessant rainfall lashing parts of Meghalaya from May 29 to June 1 has claimed the lives of six people, left four others injured, and directly impacted 1,221 individuals across the state. According to an official report released by the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 86 villages spread across 23 administrative blocks have borne the brunt of nature’s fury over the past four days.

The intense monsoon activity, which has been marked by sustained downpours and localized cloudbursts, has not only led to tragic loss of lives but also wreaked havoc on critical infrastructure and homes. The report further confirmed that 37 houses have been damaged, while 45 essential public infrastructure assets—including roads, bridges, water pipelines, and electric lines—have suffered considerable destruction.

On Sunday two significant landslide incidents reported from Umskun village and Umjari-Umtrai villages, located under the Umling Block of Ri Bhoi District. These landslides, triggered by saturation of the soil due to persistent rain, severely damaged portions of key rural roads, effectively cutting off access to some remote pockets of the district.

The SDMA report said: “There were two incidents of landslips that occurred at Umskun village and Umjari-Umtrai villages where roads are damaged. These incidents happened under Umling Block in Ri Bhoi District.”

Emergency response teams have been mobilized by the district administrations.
