Jowai as Summer Capital: Rajya Sabha MP Backs JSU’s Demand

EXCLUSIVE

SHILLONG: Dr. Wanweiroy Kharlukhi, Member of Parliament representing Meghalaya in the Rajya Sabha, has extended full support to the Jaintia Students’ Union’s (JSU) recent demand to declare Jowai as the summer capital of Meghalaya.

“I am very much for it because I think Jaintia Hills also deserve something and not only that I saw it is the demand of the Jaintia Students Union and once upon a time I was part of KSU, I was president of JSU, so I also support their demand,” said Kharlukhi, acknowledging the regional aspiration of the Jaintia community.

The proposal to adopt a dual-capital system in Meghalaya—designating Tura as the winter capital and Jowai as the summer capital—has gained renewed interest among civil society groups and political voices. When asked about the similar long-standing demand to make Tura the winter capital, Kharlukhi responded, “Why not? Why not the administration comes close to the people. We cannot concentrate only in Shillong, it should be everywhere.”

Drawing from historical context, Kharlukhi added, “It is upto the Government to do it before we had Jaintia Raja who had his summer capital in Nartiang and winter capital in Jaintiapur.”

The MP’s endorsement is expected to further energize public discourse on decentralizing Meghalaya’s administrative functions beyond Shillong, with cultural and historical relevance serving as strong arguments behind the demand.
