From Colonial Legacy to Cultural Hub: Ward’s Lake Revamp Unveiled by CM Sangma

In a historic move to reimagine one of Shillong’s most cherished landmarks, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially handed over Ward’s Lake from the Forest Department to the Department of Tourism, marking the start of a transformative journey for this 130-year-old treasure. Once a serene retreat designed by Fitzwilliam Thomas Pollok and built by Colonel Hopkins under Sir William Ward’s vision in 1894, Ward’s Lake stands ready to become the cultural and tourism heartbeat of Meghalaya. Nestled in the heart of the city with its iconic wooden bridge, winding stone paths, and vibrant flower gardens, the lake has long been a sanctuary for families, couples, and nature lovers.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said, “Launched the Wards Lake Revitalization program which will give Ward’s Lake, a signature tourism spot of Shillong the much-needed facelift and renovation.”

“We did a ceremonial handing over of Wards Lake from the Forest Department to the Tourism Department,” The Sangma said.

CM Sangma announced that tenders for the project would be floated soon, with the lake section requiring Rs 20 crore, while an adjoining promenade will need additional funding. “This is an important part and a huge potential, especially for the musicians who will be provided a platform to perform, movies which will be played, including local movies and showcasing calendar events,” he added

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh highlighted its significance as one of Northeast India’s oldest artificial lakes and stressed the lake’s enduring role as a symbol of heritage and recreation. Now, a visionary Rs 20 crore revitalization plan will enhance its timeless charm with modern attractions such as sound and light shows, musical fountains, extended visiting hours until 10 p.m., cozy cafes, and entertainment zones for all ages. The adjoining promenade will also receive a significant facelift, complemented by infrastructure upgrades including widened roads and pedestrian-friendly walkways to welcome a growing number of visitors. With cultural performances, local film screenings, and curated calendar events in the pipeline, Ward’s Lake is set to evolve into a vibrant stage that celebrates both Meghalaya’s natural beauty and its creative spirit.

As Chief Minister Sangma emphasized, this initiative goes beyond beautification—it is about reclaiming and elevating a space where community, culture, and tourism converge in harmony.
