Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday came down heavily on a construction firm for excessive delays in the completion of the Dama Chiring bridge at Masa Akong—popularly known as the Cinema Hall locality—in Williamnagar, the headquarters of East Garo Hills district.
Following repeated complaints from Cabinet Minister and local MLA Marcuise Marak, the Chief Minister personally inspected the under-construction site and expressed visible frustration with the pace of the work, issuing a stern ultimatum to the contractor.
“If you don’t have the capacity to do the job, then why did you take up the work? If you can’t do it, tell us… we’ll get someone else to complete the project,” Sangma told the contractor on site. “Don’t drag this on… you’re not only tarnishing your own reputation but ours as well. I don’t like this at all. We work very aggressively and don’t like delays like these,” he added.
During the site visit, the Chief Minister instructed the firm to submit daily progress reports and mandated an immediate increase in manpower at the construction site. He directed government officials to place the contractor on a “red alert zone” and warned that continued delays would result in the company being blacklisted and barred from securing future contracts in the state.
“Put them on full red alert zone… to be blacklisted if they don’t finish the work on time,” Sangma told the officials.
