CM Conrad Charts River Revival Plan, Calls for Community-Led Clean-Up of Wahumkhrah

In a bid to restore one of Shillong’s most polluted rivers, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday chaired a crucial meeting with officials and civil society representatives to map out a targeted action plan for reviving and cleaning the Wahumkhrah River.

“Strategic zones will be identified, with enhanced surveillance in vulnerable areas where littering and improper garbage disposal remain major challenges,” Sangma said, highlighting the government’s renewed push to address long-standing environmental degradation. “We will also explore the feasibility of bioremediation techniques in cleaning the river.”

While physical clean-up operations are already underway, the Chief Minister stressed that institutional efforts alone would not suffice. “Lasting change will only be possible through active and sustained community involvement,” he said. “Close collaboration with the Dorbar Shnong and the local community will be key to addressing the root causes of pollution.”
