No Entry for Heavy Vehicles During School Hours in Khliehriat Following JNC-KC Appeal

In a move aimed at enhancing student safety and easing traffic congestion, the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills has approved the implementation of a “No Entry” regulation for heavy vehicles during key school hours in Khliehriat, effective from May 23, 2025.

The decision comes in response to a formal request submitted on May 22 by the Jaintia National Council – Khliehriat Circle (JNC-KC), led by General Secretary Symboh Baiar Sumer. The appeal followed growing concerns from parents regarding the safety of school children, especially during drop-off and pick-up hours.

Parents had raised alarms over the unregulated movement of heavy vehicles along National Highway 6 — a route frequently used by students to cross over to school. The ongoing road construction in the area has further compounded the dangers, turning the daily commute into a hazardous ordeal for young pedestrians.

To address these concerns, the JNC-KC met with the Deputy Commissioner and pressed for an urgent regulatory measure. During the meeting, the council emphasized the risks faced by children navigating the busy and construction-affected highway, arguing that restricting heavy vehicle access during peak school timings would drastically reduce those threats.

Responding to the appeal, the Deputy Commissioner assured the delegation of swift action and confirmed that heavy vehicles will now be restricted from entering the area between 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM and 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM daily.
