Meghalaya TMC President Charles Pyngrope defended BJP’s alleged Back door entry in Meghalaya, saying there is no backdoor or front door entry as every political party intends to strengthen itself, even as the BJP’s reported efforts to expand its footprint through possible political realignments gather momentum ahead of the 2028 Assembly elections.
Pyngrope told Meghalaya News 24 that the BJP will try and if they get the numbers without attracting anti detection law, then why not. At the same time, the Meghalaya TMC President said the legislators of TMC in the state will continue with the party till 2028, however refused to rule out possible BJP shift by TMC MLAs just before 2028 Assembly elections.
Talking to Media Persons in Shillong, Pyngrope said, “We will not merge with any political parties prior to 2028, we will continue in TMC till the end 2028.”
In the backdrop of reported move by as many as eight United Democratic Party MLAs to join the BJP, Pyngrope said, “As any political party that exists in the state, they will obviously want their strength to grow, now for that you need to get the numbers, without attracting the Anti Defection law. Therefore, if they can do it and they can join, that’s up to them.”
Asked whether the expansion of the BJP in Meghalaya would pose a threat to the NPP, he said, “There is no such threat that is going to come because both NPP, UDP and the BJP are alliance in the ruling MDA government, so they are working togather anyway it’s just that the numbers are shifting.”
On allegations of the BJP making a “backdoor entry” into the State, the Meghalaya TMC unit President said, “there is no such things about backdoor or front door entry, the entry is simple, the law, the constitution allows you to merge with any other political party should you wish, provided you have the two third majority of the strength of the house or the members of the house. That’s what the law says.”
Asked whether the BJP’s expansion plan posed a threat to the TMC or the VPP, Pyngrope said, “The BJP will try, if they get the numbers without attracting anti detection law, then why not. If TMC tries to get the BJP MLAs into TMC then every political party can do that.”
“That is the horse trading because it should not take place, this law was enacted. if you don’t have two third, then you cannot merge anybody, earlier it was one third,” he said.
Asked whether he was planning to join the BJP amid reports that TMC leaders could also be in line to switch sides, the Meghalaya TMC president said, “Well, I have not got any offer, which I said earlier.”
“We will decide when the time comes. We cannot rule out or rule in anything now. As of now I am not joining BJP, but we can’t work with IFs and Buts , let us see what happens in 2028, what the situation is and accordingly I will take a call. It’s not an option for me at the moment,” he added.
