Former Rajya Sabha member Wanweiroy Kharlukhi has resigned from the National People’s Party (NPP), relinquishing his primary membership of the party with immediate effect, in a move that marks a significant political development within the Meghalaya unit ahead of the Assembly session.
In a resignation letter addressed to NPP Meghalaya State president Prestone Tynsong, Kharlukhi thanked the party leadership and fellow members for the opportunities, support and experiences extended to him during his association with the party. He also expressed gratitude for the period he spent working alongside the party and its members.
“I hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of the National People’s Party with immediate effect,” Kharlukhi stated in his letter.
Kharlukhi said he had decided to end his association with the party and requested the State unit to formally accept his resignation and remove his name from the party’s primary membership records.
“I sincerely thank the party leadership and fellow members for the opportunities, support and experiences extended to me during my association with the party. I am grateful for the time spent working alongside the party and its members,” he said.
He further requested the party leadership to complete the necessary formalities following his resignation.
“I request you to kindly accept my resignation and take necessary steps to remove my name from the primary membership records of the party with immediate effect,” Kharlukhi said.
The resignation comes at a politically significant juncture in Meghalaya, with the Assembly session beginning and political parties intensifying their engagement on issues concerning the State. Kharlukhi’s decision to sever his formal association with the NPP is therefore likely to draw attention within political circles, although his resignation letter does not cite any specific reason for his decision.
Kharlukhi, a former Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha, signed off the letter expressing his appreciation for his association with the party but did not indicate his future political course.
The resignation is effective immediately, with the former Rajya Sabha member seeking removal of his name from the NPP’s primary membership records.
