Shillong witnessed heavy security deployment on Thursday ahead of the Voice of the People’s Party (VPP) march to the Meghalaya Main Secretariat, with authorities turning the State capital into a virtual security fortress in anticipation of a large turnout of protesters. Security personnel were deployed not only around the Secretariat complex but also at key roads, junctions and sensitive locations across the city to maintain law and order during the demonstration.
The protest march, led by VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, is aimed at pressing the State government on a range of public grievances and policy issues. The party said the march is being organised to protest against the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by the National People’s Party (NPP), alleging that it has failed to address the concerns of the common people and has pursued policies that are “anti-tribal.”
Authorities have stepped up security arrangements and traffic management measures across Shillong to prevent any untoward incident and ensure the peaceful conduct of the protest. The march is expected to witness participation from VPP supporters from different parts of the State.
