The Office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), Meghalaya, on Wednesday published the Draft Electoral Roll, 2026 for all 60 Assembly constituencies under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR), 2026, with more than 1.80 lakh electors removed following a Statewide house-to-house verification exercise. The revision has reduced the electorate from 23,49,645 to 21,69,243, while the Election Department clarified that exclusion from the draft electoral roll does not affect an individual’s citizenship status and relates only to voter eligibility under the Representation of the People Act, 1950.
Chief Electoral Officer Dr. B.D.R. Tiwari said the publication of the draft roll marks the commencement of the statutory claims and objections period from August 5 to September 4, 2026. The draft electoral roll has been made available at the offices of District Election Officers, Electoral Registration Officers, Assistant Electoral Registration Officers and all polling stations across the State. Copies have also been provided to recognised national and State political parties, while hard copies have been shared with traditional heads, Dorbar Shnongs, Nokmas and other designated public institutions to facilitate public inspection. All claims and objections will be disposed of by October 3, and the final electoral roll will be published on October 7, 2026.
The Special Intensive Revision involved a comprehensive house-to-house verification exercise that achieved 100 per cent distribution and digitisation of Enumeration Forms, covering all 23,49,645 electors in Meghalaya. Of these, 7,75,665 electors (33.01 per cent) were successfully mapped as Self by linking their records with the SIR 2005 database, while 11,70,792 electors (49.83 per cent) were mapped as Progeny through the electoral records of their parents or grandparents. Another 2,22,786 electors (9.48 per cent) could not be linked with the SIR 2005 database and have been categorised under “No Mapping”. These cases will undergo detailed verification during the claims and objections process.
During the enumeration exercise, 1,80,402 electors (7.68 per cent) were identified under the Absent, Shifted, Deceased and Duplicate (ASDD) categories. The deleted entries include 81,490 deceased electors, 45,011 untraceable or absent electors, 42,532 permanently shifted electors, 6,701 duplicate enrolments and 4,668 electors whose enumeration forms were refused or classified under other categories.
Following the revision, the Draft Electoral Roll, 2026 comprises 21,69,243 electors, including 10,53,039 male electors, 11,16,199 female electors and five third-gender electors.
The Election Commission of India has also approved the rationalisation of polling stations in Meghalaya, leading to the creation of 86 new polling stations. Consequently, the total number of polling stations in the State has increased from 3,551 to 3,637, a move expected to improve voter convenience and accessibility during elections. Eligible citizens whose names are missing from the draft electoral roll may submit claims for inclusion during the statutory claims and objections period in accordance with the Election Commission’s schedule.
