Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Wednesday said the government is studying all aspects of the recurring flooding at Jorabat and examining every possible measure to address the problem. He said one of the concerns is the bowl-like structure created due to road construction, where the land below the main flyover is several feet lower, resulting in additional water accumulating quickly and causing flooding at a faster pace.
Sangma said the government is studying the area’s topography, road infrastructure and other possible causes that may be accelerating waterlogging, while district administrations of both States are coordinating efforts to minimise inconvenience to the public. “We are studying all the aspects and we are looking at whatever measures we can put in,” he said. Explaining one of the factors under examination, the Chief Minister said, “There is a concern because there is a bowl kind of a structure that is there because of the road construction that took place, which leads to where the level of the water or the level weather. the land is below the the main flyover that is there is quite deep, and about a few feet down, that also leads to abit of additional water kind of collecting out there and leads to a quicker process in which the flood happens.” He, however, noted that the road design may not be the only reason behind the flooding. “But apart from that also there will be other reasons, and I think as a government, and Administration from either sites (both Assam and Meghalaya), we should obviously look at ways and means in which we can minimize the inconvenience of the people,” Sangma said. Stressing the importance of inter-State coordination, he added, “We are all concerned about it, and the deputy commissioners are coordinating, so we hope that we’ll be able to find temporary as well as a long-term solution to this. it’s important to both of us.”
