Meghalaya to Create Unified ICCC Command Structure, Expand Smart Surveillance Across State

SHILLONG, June 30: The Meghalaya government will establish a unified command structure headed by a director or chief executive officer (CEO) to strengthen coordination among departments operating through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and expand the smart surveillance network beyond Shillong to major towns across the state. The decision was taken during a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday following his recent visit to Hyderabad, where he studied advanced command-and-control systems integrating surveillance, emergency response and public services.
“The police department, the Information Technology Department, the urban Affairs Department, the municipal and different departments are working together, and the ICCC has been very helpful… but our objective is to see that how we can further improve the functioning of the ICCC and make it even more productive,” Sangma said, adding that he was “quite impressed” by Hyderabad’s ICCC, particularly its integration of drones, surveillance cameras and emergency response systems.
Announcing the key reform, Sangma said, “A very positive suggestion has come up that… we may need to create a kind of a unified command where a director or CEO can be in charge and coordinates the efforts between the different departments,” adding that the government has decided to establish such a system to ensure seamless inter-departmental coordination.
The Chief Minister said the government also plans to extend the ICCC network to towns such as Jowai, Tura, Ri Bhoi and Nongstoin. He added that CCTV surveillance under the ICCC has already proved valuable for law enforcement, with police reporting that recorded footage has helped resolve numerous cases.
