Meghalaya, Assam Move to Defuse Border Tensions Along Lapangap

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Friday held a crucial meeting with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to address growing concerns over tensions in the Lapangap border region, with both States agreeing to jointly work towards restoring peace and finding a permanent solution to the long-pending inter-State boundary issue.

The meeting assumes significance against the backdrop of recurring friction between neighbouring villages located along the Meghalaya-Assam border, an area that has witnessed repeated disputes over jurisdiction and land claims. The two Chief Ministers discussed the prevailing situation in Lapangap and explored measures aimed at preventing further escalation while maintaining law and order in the sensitive border belt.

After the meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said,

“Met with the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma ji, to discuss the concerns faced by residents of Lapangap and the tensions between the neighbouring villages. We had a constructive discussion on measures to ease tensions and maintain peace and law and order. Urge the residents on both Meghalaya and Assam side to maintain peace and work constructively as we find a permanent solution to the border issue.”

The Meghalaya Chief Minister also appealed to residents residing in the border areas to maintain harmony and cooperate with the efforts being undertaken by both State governments to de-escalate the situation and ensure long-term stability in the region.

“Grateful to Himanta ji for his assurance to jointly address our concerns and work together towards de-escalating tensions in the future, in the best interest of communities residing in the border areas,” he added.
