With Meghalaya set to go to Assembly polls in 2028, Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar on Friday exuded confidence that the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) would secure an absolute majority, asserting that the government’s development initiatives over the past eight years would strengthen the party’s electoral prospects despite the presence of multiple political challengers in the State.
Projecting optimism over the party’s future, Dhar said the electorate was closely observing the work undertaken by the government on the ground and would make its decision accordingly when the State heads to polls.
“In 2028, We will able to win absolute majority, and why I am saying this because lot of work are happening on the ground as I speak. Fight is there but we have to manage, we have to numbers. No problem VPP is there, Congress is there, UDP is there, NPP. Lot of work happen in last 8 years and people of the state are clever, they know whom, where to vote,” Dhar said.
The statement comes at a time when political activity in Meghalaya has begun gathering momentum ahead of the next Assembly elections, with parties intensifying organisational outreach across the State. Dhar’s remarks also indicate the NPP’s attempt to position governance and development as the central plank of its campaign narrative.
The Deputy Chief Minister maintained that while electoral contests would remain competitive with the presence of regional and national parties, the ruling party was focused on consolidating support through its governance record and welfare initiatives implemented during its tenure.
