With the Shillong Parliamentary constituency heading for a crucial by-election, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is likely to announce its candidate on May 7, even as political activity gathers momentum with major parties stepping up consultations and finalising their nominees in the run-up to the polls.
Sources close to the party revealed that the candidate will be announced following a meeting of the party at 11 on May 7th.
The announcement likely to be held after the General executive meeting of the party for Khasi Jaintia Hills region, sources added.
Meanwhile, Voice of the People’s Party has fielded acamedician Batskhem Myrboh as its candidate. BJP said it has 4-5 aspiring candidates and the name will only be announced once the election is declared. Alliance partner in the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government, United Democratic Party is still discussing on the candidates.
Meghalaya Congress is likely to finalize candidate for Shillong Parliamentary constituency bye election within 15th of this month.
The by-election has been necessitated following the demise of sitting Member of Parliament from Shillong Parliamentary constituency Ricky A. J. Syngkon on February 19, 2026, with the vacancy arising less than two years after the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when the Voice of the People’s Party leader defeated Pala by a huge margin.
