MPs from Madhya Pradesh Visit Meghalaya, Seek Information of Honeymooning Indore Couple in Sohra

In a high-profile intervention that underscores mounting concern over the disappearance of a newlywed couple from Indore during their honeymoon in Meghalaya’s iconic Sohra (Cherrapunjee), two Members of Parliament from Madhya Pradesh—Shankar Lalwani and another delegate—arrived in the state to personally assess the ongoing search and rescue operations. The tragic incident, which has now entered its seventh day, has sent shockwaves through both states, sparking widespread public and political attention. As search efforts intensify in Meghalaya’s challenging monsoon-clad terrain, the MPs met with top state officials, pressed for faster results, and assured the distressed family of full support, reaffirming that the missing tourists are not just visitors but “guests of the state.”

Talking to Media persons,
Shankar Lalwani, Lok Sabha MP from Indore, voiced serious concern over the fate of the honeymooning couple who vanished while visiting Sohra, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Meghalaya known for its steep cliffs and lush rainfall. “We were told more drones will be provided, more sniffer dogs will be deployed. But due to the steep terrains and heavy monsoon, the search operation is getting obstructed,” Lalwani told the press, echoing the complexities faced by the rescue teams.

During their visit, the MPs met with the Director General of Police, Chief Secretary, Inspector General, and the Superintendent of Police overseeing the case. “The DGP briefed us on the operation. The Chief Secretary said that several villages are being combed thoroughly. SDRF and other specialized teams have been activated. More than 100 personnel are currently involved in the search,” Lalwani said.

Describing the urgency of the situation, he added, “It’s been seven days since the couple went missing. We have requested that more drones and trained sniffer dogs be pressed into service immediately. The police are doing their level best and we’re hopeful. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh has also spoken with the Meghalaya Chief Minister regarding this matter.”

Reassuring the media and the family, the MP emphasized, “Yes, we are satisfied with the steps taken so far, but time is of the essence. Tourism is a key focus in Meghalaya, and these tourists are our guests. We must do our utmost.”

The couple’s family, who accompanied the delegation, raised concerns during the meeting with state authorities. “We’ve brought up the doubts and fears the family shared with us. The SP was also present and gave strong assurances that all efforts are being made. The local tribal villages are also cooperating with the search, which is a positive sign,” Lalwani noted.

The incident has sparked national concern and highlighted the need for enhanced tourist safety measures in remote destinations like Sohra, especially during monsoon. The MPs’ visit reflects both political accountability and human empathy, as the nation waits anxiously for news about the missing couple.
